Who We Are

Welcome to San Francisco State University!

The San Francisco State of Mind

San Francisco State University, located in one of the world’s most vibrant and beautiful cities, is a recognized leader in addressing issues both global and close to home. Ever since it was established in 1899 as a teacher-training school, SF State has been known for its commitment to excellent teaching. SF State awards bachelor’s degrees in 124 areas, master’s in 105, and a doctorate in educational leadership. In addition, SF State offers 11 credential programs and 36 certificate programs.

SF State has been developing resident expertise and organizational capacity to advance efforts on the development, use, and sustainability of ePortfolios and related support services since 2005. However, the use of portfolios on our campus is not new–portfolios have been used as a comprehensive assessment strategy in many departments for more than 60 years. Academic Technology is now partnering with faculty and departments to address a current and emerging need for students to have an environment in which they can collect, select, reflect upon, build, and publish a digital archive of their academic work.

SF State’s Connect to Learning project was focused on the use of ePortfolios in the Metro Academies (Metro), a partnership between SF State and City College of San Francisco. Metro is a learning community for the first two years of school, targeted to low-income, first-generation, underrepresented first-time freshmen. Metro is currently the only program at SF State that uses ePortfolios for first- and second-year students. ePortfolios are part of several high-impact practices integrated into Metro.

The four-minute video at the top of this page gives an overview of the ePortfolio initiative at SF State.
